It is the start of Turkey season in Canada, and our friends in the United States aren’t far behind us! We seem to eat Turkey, Turkey and more Turkey for the next 3 months, and with it, all the trimmings of pies, dressing, cakes, those awesome goodies Grandma always makes. Yeah, you know the ones!!
So how do we continue to eat healthy through this “season”? The key is moderation.
We’ve talked a few times about the 80/20 rule, it is something we have to think about if we want to stay on track. I know me, and I know I will not pass up a piece of pumpkin pie! Or the carb loaded dressing. If you haven't read about the 80/20 rule there is a link at the bottom of this post, How To Use The 80/20 Rule For A Healthy Lifestyle.
So, I know I will have to really behave the week of “Turkey”, and likely the week after if I don’t want to gain any weight, and feel good.
For myself, it really isn’t even about gaining a pound or two, I have totally changed my diet over the last 6 months and eat so much healthier. It has allowed me to feel so much better, and get off of the medications I was taking for my osteoarthritis, that had some very nasty side effects. Yes, FOOD choices helped my arthritis!! I was just to my specialist last week and she was ecstatic that I was off of the medication and had done it with healthy choices! A plus has been I’ve also dropped about 15 pounds, which of course helps my joints as well.
So, for the upcoming Thanksgiving dinner, and the next 3 months of these kind of dinners, I will be watching what I put in my mouth, and how much of it as well.
I will put lots of vegetables on my plate first, about ½ of my plate. A small amount of turkey, a small spoon of mashed potatoes, a bit of gravy and dressing. I will have that piece of pumpkin pie, but it will be ½-1/3 smaller than I used to. I will try HARD not to put too much of all the other goodies that tend to be everywhere. Moderation, Moderation, Moderation NOT deprivation!
I won’t feel like I missed out on anything, I will have had a bit of everything my taste buds love, but I won’t be filling up on it, I will be filling up with my vegetables.
Having a plan before we go to these dinner’s or even if you’re hosting the dinner, will help you succeed through “turkey season”. If it’s a pot luck dinner, bring something fun but healthy! Bring a veggies platter for an appetizer, or a fruit platter for a dessert. Help yourself out a bit!
